ACL Rehabilitation
An ACL tear is one of the more common injuries seen in Australian sports and also one that keeps athletes out of sport for a lengthy period.
Historically, all younger athletes with a full ACL rupture underwent a “knee reconstruction” using either the hamstring tendon or patella tendon on the same knee as a graft. This is still the case for those wanting to get back to sports involving cutting, jumping and pivoting such as AFL, basketball, rugby and soccor. However, we now have some good evidence that even full ACL tears can heal without surgery. Protocols are being developed and researched to try and provide the ideal healing conditions and to determine whom may benefit from this conservative approach versus surgery. In particular, if you do not wish to return to sports involving cutting/pivoting then a conservative rehabilitation approach my be for you.
Your Physiotherapist and/or surgeon will work with you to determine to approach that suits your circumstances.
Regenerate Physiotherapists are highly experienced in both post-surgical and conservative ACL rehabilitation. We will guide you every step of the way, provide specific goals for each stage and utilise researched assessment protocols to determine when you are ready to return to your sport.
