Falls Prevention Programs
Falls affect us all—whether personally or someone we love or care about. Every year more than one in four older adults report falling and falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations and deaths among older Australians aged 65 and over, accounting for 77% of injury hospitalizations. There are simple steps you can take to prevent falls and decrease falls risks.
Strength, flexibility, balance and reaction time are considered the most readily modifiable risk factors for falls. Research has shown that even people in their 90’s can improve their strength and balance and reduce falls risk.
Falls Risk Assessments
We have developed a Falls Risk assessment (based on the STEADI initiative in the US) which includes an outcome measure questionnaire, functional lower limb strength testing and balance testing. The tests have normative data and cut off points that allow us to determine whether you are low, medium or high risk for falls. If a clients is assessed as high risk we would recommend they work one on one with their Physio in our studio plus complete regular home exercises. Clients that are low to medium risk have the option to join one of our Balance and Falls Prevention classes or may wish to have a specific program developed which they can do in their local gym or at home.
Our Physiotherapists run specific balance and falls prevention classes on Wednesdays and Fridays. These 30 minute classes are designed for persons aged 65-95 and include a warm up, functional lower limb strength exercises and dynamic balance challenges. Exercises are progressed or regressed as needed for the individual.
Classes are claimable through private health cover with the code 561. An initial falls risk assessment is required prior to attending classes.
Classes cost $20 per session and most health funds will rebate $8-12.
