Do I Need Surgery?

Shoulder pain is a very common complaint that many people suffer from and most presentations can be categorised under the heading of Rotator Cuff Related Shoulder Pain.

Some common diagnoses include Subacromial Impingement, Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy or Bursitis. Many people with these conditions can sufferwith pain and reduced shoulder function for long periods of time which often leads them to ask thequestionShould I get surgery?

Research has demonstrated that a graduated exercise program is AS effective as surgery in long term follow ups, for most problems of the Rotator Cuff. Specific examples have been found in some studies, that for Subacromial Impingement, exercise can reduce the need for surgery by up to 80%! At the 1year follow up marks, the research found that the outcomes were almost exactly the same for those who had surgery, and for those who solely did an exercise rehab program.

Adherence to the RIGHT exercise program is essential for positive outcomes. It is very important to discuss with your physiotherapist the best way to go about it. Most rehab programs will take up to 12 weeks and some people will respond quicker than others. It is important to stay patient in this period and to persist with your program, consulting with your physio along the way.
