What is it and what can i do about it?

With winter hitting heavy its about now your local pool ups its chlorine levels as we avoid the tarmac in a frenzy to get “summer body” ready!

Whether you’re setting your sights on making the other end of the pool or pulling out your binoculars to try catch a glimpse of Rottnest, often you will find yourself experiencing some shoulder pain leaving you in trepidation over the next lap.

Swimmers Shoulder is a term used my medical professionals to describe pain within the glenoid humeral joint during overhead locomotion. Being such a repetitive motion there is a number of conditions that can fall under the swimmers shoulder umbrella including impingement syndrome, tendinopathy, bursitis, muscular strains, ligamentous strain or even in some cases capsule and cartilaginous injuries.

The shoulder joint itself only has a very small surface area for articulation, leaving it with an abundance of range and if poor control is present, looser than a wizards sleeve!

Being such a vast umbrella term, a comprehensive assessment by your Physiotherapist is of utmost importance to identify your specific impairments and formulate a more specific diagnosis and treatment plan to get you back in the pond in no time!

Our Physiotherapist’s are highly experienced in all associated conditions and will be able to provide you with symptomatic relief from the painful structures as well as identify and correct those technique flaws and contributing factors to ensure that you get back in the pool and stay in there to get fighting fit for summer!

If you believe you or someone else may be suffering from swimmers shoulder do not hold off any longer! Summer will be here faster than a toupee in the sea breeze! Get in touch with us today here at Regenerate Physiotherapy!
